I am a chaired Professor in Management at the York Management School, University of York. I received my PhD in Business Administration from the University of Bologna and I previously held positions at Tilburg University, Maastricht University and at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
In my research, I strive to understand how business firms and hybrid organizational forms evolve and adapt to address complex societal issues, with a particular focus on inclusive healthcare delivery and poverty alleviation. By using a multidisciplinary, multi-level interpretive lens at the intersection between organizational sociology and public policy, my research has investigated the complex interactions of policy reforms with organizational strategies in the healthcare and biopharmaceutical sector; the effectiveness of multi-strategy policy interventions in improving maternal and child care indicators in emerging contexts; the influence of organizational culture in shaping patient-perceived quality of health service; and the role of inter-organizational collaborative networks in defining patient outcomes; the emergence of new organizational forms, such as social entrepreneurship in the education sector. To understand these phenomena I use theoretical lenses such as organizational learning and organizational complexity. My studies have examined several institutional environments, including Italy, the Netherlands, India, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The results of my research have directly contributed to my educational activity in York, where I am module leader of Management, Governance and Society for the MSc in Management. At Tilburg University, I was Academic Director of the Master’s Specialisation in Global Management of Social Issues, while at Maastricht University, I was vice-director of the Health Policy, Innovation and Management Master’s program. In terms of contributions to the scientific community, I currently serve as Associate Editor of PLOS One and of BMC Health Services Research and I have convened since 2015 a conference track at the European Group of Organizations Studies (EGOS) yearly Colloquium, to reflect on contemporary challenges for healthcare organizations.
My work has been recognized by several research prizes, awarded among others by the Academy of Management (Healthcare Management Division and International Management Division), Strategic Management Society, and Academy of International Business. My articles have been published in outlets such as Social Science and Medicine, PLOS One , Health Policy , Health Policy and Planning , Regional Studies, Organization & Environment , Long Range Planning , and Pharmacoeconomics. My authored book (together with Ralf Wilden, Massimo Garbuio and Daniele Mascia) titled “Healthcare Entrepreneurship” has been published by Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, in July 2018.
